DSP up for UKOUG conference 2008 like never before…
on 2nd Dec 2008DSP shares their view of achieving delivery of ‘five 9s’ availability – DSP Managed Services sets the “gold standard” up for uptime for Oracle and Microsoft technologies.
If you’ve always considered Open Source synonymous with excellent products that, unfortunately, were unsupportable for commercial organisations, it’s time to think again.
Today’s Open Source products provide the flexibility, ease of maintenance and configurability not found in many mainstream monitoring packages. What’s more, with ever-increasing access to professional support organisations, communities and forums, Open Source is now a fully viable commercial solution.
But what are the implications of this for the monitoring of your Oracle estate? According to Jason Lester of Oracle Certified Partner, DSP Managed Services, it means a great deal: “By using best-of-breed open-source products, including Nagios, RRDtool and BIRT, Open Source can deliver enterprise-ready systems and network-management software far more quickly and cost-effectively than expensive, inflexible closed-source alternatives.”
That’s the theme of “Monitoring Oracle using Open Source Software”, DSP’s presentation at this year’s UKOUG 2008 to be given by Mr. Lester.

• Jason Lester – DSP
Lester is an experienced Oracle DBA, who has been using E-Business suite as well as a number of other Oracle products, for over 10 years. In the last 3-5 years he has invested significant time using and evaluating monitoring solutions, and sees them as an integral part of the role of a DBA in today's fast moving world. Lester told us:
“I probably know as much about Open Source monitoring anyone working in the field today, which, all modesty aside, is why I think I have something really worth hearing on the subject.” If his enthusiasm is anything to go by, there will be few disappointed members of his forthcoming audience.”
According to Lester: “It’s all part of DSP’s mission to set the ‘gold standard’ for uptime. You see, we believe Open Source monitoring is the way forward in our determination to deliver ‘five 9s’ availability.” He added: “In fact at DSP our new corporate motto is ‘Uptime. All the time.’ Which couldn’t be a clearer articulation of what we stand for.”
Founded in 1999 primarily as a 24*7 managed services provider (MSP) covering the entire Oracle technology stack from operating system to database, DSP also offer a full range of professional services. Working to best-practice methodologies, they can provide everything from individual consultants to complete project teams (functional and/or technical) with specific niche Oracle skills. Customers can also look to DSP for ongoing monitoring, control, prediction and reporting across all of their databases, applications and integrations.
DSP count some of the best-known companies in the world among their clients, including sectors like Charity, Retail and Gaming, Media and Telco, Transport, Oil and Gas Higher Education and Professional Services. How do they account for this success? Lester explains that it all comes down to one thing: “Peace of mind – and that comes from 24*7 availability – which is precisely what our customers get from us. And why we’ve never lost one to date.”
On the future of Opens Source, Lester is a confident man. How confident he can be of a full house at UKOUG remains to be seen. Don’t hesitate to contact marketing@dsp-msp.com for any information regarding the conference presentation on Monitoring Oracle with Open Source Software.
